Motion Graphics: Light's Touch
A project by Amore Fourie and Venus Bebensee

Brief summary
A title sequence functions, at its core, as a keyhole into the life of the feature. It presents the tone, mood and foreshadows the action that follows, capturing the essence of the film or series. Students were required to conceptualise, storyboard, design and animate a 30-60 second mini title sequence for their chosen blurb. Firs was the conceptualising phase where students have to do research and brainstorm various possible narratives for their blurb. Between 5 to 10 hypothetical cast members should be integrated in the narrative itself with the students chosen media. Secondly a storyboard needed to be developed, sketching and showcasing the flow of the narrative. By this point students needed to develop and choose their chosen medium and score that will accompany the narrative.

Deliverables
01 1x title sequence of 30-60 seconds

Design strategy
The story evolved around a blind girl and her father who lived in France during WWII. On the other side of the narrative is a young Nazi boy who becomes one of Hitler's soldiers and tracks the resistance. Since the rest of the story was never revealed to us, it gave us full creative freedom. We decided to go with a more romantic and dramatic genre and focused on the relationship and connection touch brings.  We made use of various textures and filmed long exposure hands in black and white to convey our narrative and portray the relationship between the boy and girl and their connection.  The close view of different textured mediums creates a connection between the viewer and the character’s condition. Beyond her condition, the textures give visual interest through composition, surface texture and movement. A historic mood was created through the decision to use only black and white as our colours.  Film and stop-motion were our primary mediums,  and by combining the two, interesting visuals and drama within the title sequence could be achieved.
